Primary Burn Care Training Successfully Concluded at SKMH

Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital, Sankhu, Kathmandu

Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital has successfully concluded a six-day Primary Burn Care Training programme in collaboration with Dhulikhel Hospital. The training set out to strengthen the skills of healthcare professionals in providing timely and effective primary care for burn injuries, combining classroom teaching with clinical observation in the operating theatre and emergency department, along with hands-on workshops. Across the six days participants worked through burns epidemiology, classification and assessment, fluid resuscitation, dressings and bandaging, rehabilitation and splinting, infection prevention, burn nutrition, pain management and the special burns, closing with psychosocial support, communication skills and documentation. On the final day teams from Dhulikhel Hospital, Dolakha Hospital and Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital presented their action plans, and all participants completed the post-test and received their certificates.

Interburns Training Centre Fellowship Programme

Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital is an accredited Interburns Training Centre (ITC) offering structured clinical fellowships in burn care. Fellows from around the world gain practical, hands-on experience in a high-volume, resource-appropriate burn service in Kathmandu, Nepal. Established in 1997 through a partnership with Interplast Germany, SKMH is Nepal's leading dedicated centre for burn, plastic and reconstructive surgery, operating as a 100-bed facility with a dedicated High Dependency Burn Unit, ICU capacity, fully equipped operating theatres and comprehensive outpatient dressing services, and managing approximately 500-550 burn patients annually. Fellowships are offered in two streams - surgical and nursing - and give participants the knowledge and skills needed to help establish or strengthen comprehensive burn services in their home countries.
